New Delhi, India (December 10, 2013): On World Human Rights Day, Sikh groups submitted a Memorandum to Ms. Lisa Grande, UN Resident Coordinator-India, urging her to report to the Human Rights Council about Congress party’s ongoing practice of protecting and rewarding its leaders who lead death squads in 1984. The memorandum to UN along with a copy of “Sikh Genocide Petition” was submitted by All India Sikh Students Federation and Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).

Hundreds of victims and widows of November 1984 also held a “Justice Rally” outside the UN Office in New Delhi to highlight the 29 years of denial of justice to victims and impunity to Congress leaders who orchestrated genocidal attacks on Sikhs after the death of Indira Gandhi.

According to Federation President Karnail Singh Peermohammad, victims have gathered here today to urge the UN to investigate the country wide killing of Sikhs during November 1984 and recognize it as Genocide under UN Convention on Genocide. Today’s rally will remind the global community that victims of 1984 Sikh Genocide have not received justice after 29 years, added Peermohammad.

On November 01, a Sikh Genocide Petition was filed before UNHRC by AISSF with the support of million signatures urging UN to investigate the systematic, intentional and deliberate killing of Sikhs carried out across India during the first week of November 1984 and to recognize these attacks as “Genocide”.

Sikh human rights groups have developed consensus that the recent discoveries of mass killings of Sikhs in more than 100 cities throughout India proves that November 1984 is Genocide as defined in Article 2 of the UN Convention on Genocide. The gravity, scale, organized and intentional nature of these genocidal attacks was concealed by the Indian governments by portraying them as “Anti-Sikh Riots of Delhi”. The recently discovered evidence shows that more than 37000 claims for deaths and injuries were filed by the victims of November 1984, out of which more than 20,000 claims were by victims who were attacked outside Delhi.
