Amritsar, Punjab (August 25, 2013): As per some media reports the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) has decided to raise a memorial for the victims of the Hondh-Chillar Massacre at the Sikh genocide site at village Hondh Chillar, near Rewari in Haryana.
SGPC president S. Avtar Singh Makkar reportedly said on August 23, 2013 that the proposal to memorial is outcome of repeated demands raised by survivors of the Hondh-Chillar massacre that took place on 2 November, 1984.
It must be noted that the Hondh-Chillar Massacre was part of wider plan of Sikh genocide 1984. In this massacre 32 Sikhs were rutally murdered while the village Hondh-Chillar, a Sikh village in Haryana, was completely distroyed.
SGPC president said that the proposed memorial shall reflect the high values of humanity and it shall give a message of “Sarbat Da Bhala” (welfare for all).
It is learnt that Engg. Manwinder Singh Giaspura, Darshan Singh Gholian, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh and 10 members of the victims families met Avtar Singh Makkar at SGPC’s Amritsar based headquarters on August 23, 2013. S. Avtar Singh Makkar reportedly assured financial aid to the members of Hondh-Chillar co-ordination committee to support their legal fight for securing the justice for the victims and survivors of the Hondh-Chllar massacre.
It is notable that Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh laid foundation of Sikh Genocide 1984 Memorial at Village Hondh on March 06, 2011. But in October 2011 the SGPC denied to construct the Sikh genocide memorial at Village Hondh-Chillar.
SGPC president S. Avtar Singh Makkar had declared that [the] “SGPC realised that there was no use to construct memorial there since none of the affected family was living at Hondh-Chillar and if needed, the memorial would be constructed after thorough discussion with the affected families”.
