Sikh martial artists show combative skills at Virsa Sambhal Gatka event

Talwando Sabo (Bathinda): Gatka teams from Punjab and Rajasthan showcased their mesmerising combative and defensive skills of traditional martial art during Virsa Sambhal Gatka tournament held at Talwandi Sabo on Vaisakhi, a release by International Sikh Martial Art Academy (ISMAA) reads.
As many as 10 Gatka teams participated in this 15th edition of Virsa Sambhal Gatka event conducted by the International Sikh Martial Art Academy (ISMAA) in collaboration with District Gatka Association (DGA) Bathinda.
Speaking on the occasion ISMAA chairman Harjeet Singh Grewal announced that Academy is compiling an international directory of all Gatka Akharas running across the globe so as to bring out an exhaustive reference book for the first time. ISMAA vice chairman Avtar Singh and Raghbir Chand revealed that ISMAA has chalked out an exhaustive plan to organize martial art training camps, Gatka seminars and workshops in different states to train the budding players.
Elaborating more ISMAA secretary Udhey Singh informed that academy would also publish a bimonthly Gatka sport magazine to highlight martial art activities and events besides creating mass awareness about the historic martial art worldwide.

DGA chairman Parminder Singh Sidhu of Fateh group of colleges said Gatka is a time tested self-defensive art which also imbibes cultural and traditional values among the youth. Lauding the initiatives of ISMAA in furtherance of this martial art, he advocated that it is need of the hour to promote this centuries old traditional sport so as to wean away the youth from the menace of habit forming drugs.
Giving details of tournament results DGA president Harjit Singh Gill Kalan informed that in traditional weapons demonstration (team event) in men’s section miri-piri Gatka academy Gill Kalan got first position whereas Baba Jagat Singh Gatka Akhara Gurharsahai second and khalsa warriors Ganganagar got second and third place respectively. Similarly in women’s category miri-piri Gatka academy Gill Kalan, Shaheed Baab Zorawar Singh Gatka akhara Jodhpur Pakhar came second and Kaur Khalsa Gatka Akhara Fatehgarh Sahib achieved third position.
In women’s Farri-Soti fight (individual event) Baba Jagat Singh Gatka Akhara Gurharsahai defeated miri-piri Gatka academy Gill Kalan and Baba Jujhar Singh gatka academy Aklia Kalan got third position.
Among others present on the occasion included ISMAA finance secretary Baljit Singh Saini, district coordinators Sachnaam Singh Hoshiarpur, Harjinder Singh Tarntaran, Harkiranjit Singh Fazilka and Talwinder Singh Ferozpur and Gurpreet Singh Butahari Gatka referee.
