New York (June 12, 2012): In a press statement received from “Sikhs for Justice” (SJF) a human rights organization, it is informed that SJF along with All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) has launched an international campaign “1984 – Yes, It’s Genocide” to collect “Million Signatures” in support of the Sikh “Genocide Petition” to be filed before the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) in November.

“A website will be also launched to connect the Sikh community worldwide and to attract the support of Jewish, Armenian, Bosnian and Rwandan people who have been victims of genocide” informed SJF representative.

The Sikh “Genocide Petition” will be filed pursuant to “1503 Petition” procedure asking UN to investigate the systematic, intentional and deliberate killing of Sikhs carried out throughout India during the first week of November 1984 and to recognize the same as “Genocide”. Under The “1503 PETITION” the Commission on Human Rights examines complaints which show consistent patterns of gross human rights violations as in the case of Sikhs during November 1984.

Based on the gravity, scale and specially the organized nature of the attacks on Sikhs during November 1984 and discovery of new evidence containing mass graves, ruined villages, burnt Gurudwaras (Sikh Temples) and other traces of Sikh population annihilated during November 1984, the petition to the UN argues that the “the intentional and deliberate nature of the attacks on Sikh lives, properties and places of worship during November 1984 makes them crime of “Genocide” as per Article 2 of the U.N. Convention on Genocide”.

SFJ will approach Israel, Armenia, Bosnia and Rwanda who have been victims of genocide for the endorsement and support of Sikh “Genocide Petition” before UN, stated attorney Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor to SFJ. Through this Petition, SFJ will provide UN with documents, witnesses and evidence related to November 1984 Sikh Genocide, added attorney Pannun.

According to Jatinder Singh Grewal, Coordinator for “1984 – Yes It’s Genocide” campaign, since the launching of the campaign in North America, more than fifty thousand signatures have already been collected. “1984 – Yes It’s Genocide” campaign will also be taken to countries of Australia, UK and European Union to collect signatures from Sikh Diaspora, added Grewal. The campaign was simultaneously launched from Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary in Canada; New York, New Jersey and San Francisco in United States with the support of American Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC) an umbrella organization of Gurudwaras in USA, Ontario Gurudwaras Committee (OGC) and Ontario Sikh and Gurudwara Council (OSGC) umbrella organizations of Sikh Gurudwaras in Canada.

The Sikh community is pursing the November 1984 Sikh “Genocide Petition” before the UN pursuant to May 05 edict of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, the highest temporal seat of the Sikh religion.
