Supreme Court of India to hear Prof. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar’s case today

New Delhi, India (February 26, 2014): As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN), the Supreme Court of India (SCI) is scheduled to hear a petition seeking commutation of death sentence of Sikh political prisoner Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar.

Prof. Bhullar has been on death row since 2001. His arrest dates back to 1995.

Current petition was moved on Prof. Bhullar’s behalf after the pronouncement of January 21, 2014 decision of the SCI commuting the death sentences of 15 convicts, of which 13 were commuted on the ground of inordinate delay in execution, while two others had received concession on the ground of deteriorated mental health.

On last date of hearing the SCI had sought responses from Delhi government and the Government of India. The Court had also sought status report from Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) about Prof. Bhullar’s health condition. Prof. Bhullar is being treated from mental ailments in IHBAS since 2010.

It is expected the Government of India shall file it’s response in the court today. The Delhi Government has already favoured commutation of death sentence in this case.

As per information IHBAS has also submitted it’s status report in the court. Four Judges curative bench is hearing this petition.
