Patiala, Punjab (March 17, 2014): The possibility of former chief minister Beant Singh's assassins playing any role in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections by coming out of jail on premature release now seems to be bleak following the chief electoral officer issuing directions to deputy commissioners in the state regarding release of convicts.
Amritsar, Punjab (March 15, 2014): As per information a Sikh delegation led by activist Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on March 14, 2014. The delegation that comprised 20-member delegation including some Sikhs from Canada, urged Giani Gurbachan Singh to keep his promise regarding the permanent release of Sikh political prisoners who are being kept in prisons beyond the terms of their sentences.

Duo were released on parole on December 27, 2013 after 44 days long hunger strike protest by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa.
Jalandhar, Punjab (January 24, 2014): Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, who fasted for 45 days in November-December 2013 seeking release of Sikh political prisoners who had completed their prison sentences, has stated that the encumbrance to ensure permanent release of concerned Sikh prisoners now lies on Akal Takht Jathedar Gaini Gurbachan Singh.
Chandigarh/ Patiala (January 24, 2014): It is learnt that on the completion of his 28-day parole period, Sikh political prisoner Bhai Gurmeet Singh returned to the Burail Model Jail, Chandigarh, on January 23, 2014. He reportedly reached the jail at 3 pm.
Mohali, Punjab (January 12, 2013): The Bandi Singhs Rihai Committee, that was formed to assist Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa during his hunger strike seeking release of 6 Sikh political prisoners recently addressed media to explain the progress in this matter since the conclusion of 44 days long hunger strike protest of Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa.
Mohali, Punjab (December 29, 2013): While talking to certain media persons at Gurdwara Amb Sahib (Mohali) on December 28, Sikh activist Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa said that he would continue his protest for the permanent release of the Sikh prisoners. Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa had reached Amb Sahib Gurdwara after ending his 45-day hunger strike at the Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar.

[t]he Punjab Government is mulling the premature release of 145 convicts undergoing life term in jails across the state. The case files are being cleared at a fast pace and the release orders are expected by December 31.

He has been on hunger strike for last 42 days was demanding release of 6 Sikh political prisoners who were not being granted parole or permanent release despite serving the minimum mandatory terms of their sentences.
The issue of prolonged detention of Sikh political prisoners attained global attention during last few weeks after a Sikh farmer of Haryana pledged to fast until his death or the release of named prisoners who were not being released by the Indian State (provincial governments or the UT administration/s) despite serving the minimum mandatory terms of their sentences.
