Sikh Vichar Manch Raises Alarm Over Proposed Private Publication of Dr. Gurbhagat Singh’s Works

The Sikh intellectuals and academicians have opposed the publishing of Dr. Gurbaghat Singh’s English translation of Granth Sahib by some individuals saying such exercise will mar the authenticity of the great work done by the late Sikh scholar. The media reports last week said that some academicians who kept their hold on the translation work are out to publish it hurriedly, perhaps to take the credit for themselves.

Remembering Professor Gurbhagat Singh

Professor Gurbhagat Singh who recently passed away after a debilitating stroke was a genius, not born but self-made. He used to be the first to arrive in the Punjabi University Library and myself the last to leave. When in Patiala, we used to meet every day. Once in two months or so he will come to my carrel and we will have tea together.

Dr. Gurbhagat Singh (1938-2014) – a brief biographical note

In Dr Gurbhagat Singh’s death on April 3, the world of English literature, Punjab and Sikh studies have lost an innovative thinker and interpreter. The severest blow is that his life long project of translating Shri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS) into English remains incomplete. His translation of 1208 pages will remain a hugely rich and valued contribution that will need to be carried forward.

Sikh scholar and intellectual Dr. Gurbhagat Singh passed away. He had suffered a stroke about two weeks back and was shifted to Delhi from Patiala for treatment. He breathed last this morning at Delhi.
