Chandigar: As per media reports the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued notice of stay to the SGPC about newly appointed chief secretary Harcharan Singh. Talking up a petition moved by Ludhiana resident Balwinder Singh, the High court asked the SGPC to explain that why his appointment should not be stayed.
In his petition filed through Advocate Karanvir Singh Kahlon, Balwinder Singh has reportedly challenged the appointment of Chief Secretary Harcharan Singh.
After issuing the notice the court reportedly deferred the matter for 5th of November in order to provide an opportunity to the SGPC to defend the appointment.
The court also said that as per the norms, the SGPC should not have created the post. It also said that person appointed for the post is more than 70 years of age.
A former banker, Harcharan Singh was appointed as the chief secretary by the SGPC in August. The appointment is being viewed as a political move triggered by Punjab’s ruling party Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal).
It may be recalled that Chief Secretary’s appointment was being opposed by a number of Sikh groups, including Sikh Sadbhawna Dal led by former Darbar Sahib Sahib Hazoori Ragi Baldev Singh Wadala.
