Buddha Nalla – One of the most polluted over ground water sources in Punjab

Ludhiana, Punjab (February 7, 2013): It is learnt that the International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO) has expressed great concern over the lackadaisical approach of the administration to get Buddha Nullah cleaned up.

The human rights body has maintained that despite the Punjab and Haryana High Court fixing the state’s responsibility, nothing has been done.

In a press release issued by IHRO chairperson Advocate D. S. Gill, general secretary Mohinder Singh Grewal, women’s rights counsellor Dr Jiwanjot Kaur and legal coordinator Sukhdev Singh, said it was really shocking and intriguing how the industrial units continued to discharge untreated effluents in the nullah.

“The Punjab and Haryana High Court had taken up the matter suo motu where the IHRO was made a petitioner in the writ through the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC),” said Advocate D. S. Gill.

He said the Punjab and Haryana High Court while rejecting the IHRO plea of appointing a public monitoring committee to watch and check the work being done to clean up the Buddha Nullah had categorically held that “it’s a primary duty and responsibility of the government to complete the work efficiently and promptly”. “Still the matter is hanging fire,” the IHRO activists stated.

The IHRO is likely to approach the High Court again in order to speed up the matter of public importance as the pollution level is rising and is a threat to the lives of residents.
