Gang violence has become a pressing issue in Punjab. The narrative surrounding gangsters, gangs, and related violence is frequently highlighted in the media and official statements, particularly in the wake of violent incidents — which are becoming increasingly common.
A concerning pattern has emerged in which gangsters, while in police custody and allegedly cooperating in weapons recovery during remand, are reported to suddenly open fire on police. These situations often result in so-called “encounters,” where the gangster is shot—typically in the knee or ankle—or killed.
