Book “Jaanbaz Rakha” to Be Released Tomorrow at Sri Damdama Sahib

Bathinda, Punjab: A significant chapter of Sikh history — the events of 1984 and the life and legacy of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale — will be revisited through the newly released Punjabi translation of the acclaimed book “The Gallant Defender.” The Punjabi edition, titled “Jaanbaz Rakha,” will be officially launched tomorrow at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib during a Gurmat Samagam organized by the Lakhi Jungle Khalsa Jatha. The event coincides with the celebration of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Parkash Purab and remembrance of the Sikh genocide of 1984.

The book is a Punjabi translation of the well-known English work “The Gallant Defender” by noted author A.R. Darshi. The translation has been undertaken by Bibi Sartaj Kaur, who has skillfully rendered the original text into Punjabi. “Jaanbaz Rakha” serves as an insightful and heartfelt effort to portray Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s courageous personality and his resolute struggle with authenticity and depth.

Bibi Sartaj Kaur and her family personally witnessed the turbulent period following 1984 and experienced the Sikh resistance movement firsthand. As the life partner of Bhai Surinderpal Singh Tharua, a tireless servant of the Khalsa Panth, she had an intimate understanding of the Panthic situation during and after the militant era.

Earlier translations of the book did not fully correspond with the original English text. In this new translation, great care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the original writing, faithfully presenting the facts and interpretations as expressed by the author.

The book discusses in detail Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s warrior spirit, his struggle against the pseudo-Nirankari sect, his efforts for the Anandpur Sahib Resolution, and the broader context of the 1984 events.

In the original English edition, the author had included the Anandpur Sahib Resolution as an appendix. The translator, in this latest Punjabi edition, has added annotated versions of all known forms of the Resolution to aid readers’ understanding and provide historical clarity.

“Jaanbaz Rakha” promises to be an important contribution to Sikh historiography, helping readers understand one of the most critical periods of Sikh history while addressing the shortcomings of previous translations.
