Canada-India relations have remained strained since September 2023 when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking in the Canadian Parliament, stated that there were credible allegations linking agents of the Indian government to the murder of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil.

In the meanwhile, Canada initiated an inquiry commission to investigate incidents of foreign interference affecting the country’s democratic process and elections. India was included in this inquiry as one of the countries engaged in foreign interference in Canada.

The commission has concluded its proceedings and recently released its final report, which reveals that India was the second most active country, after China, in terms of threats of foreign interference in Canada. The report also highlights India’s efforts to target the 800,000-strong Canadian Sikh population.
