Google’s Gemini AI Quoting Fake Verses as “Gurbani”, Sikh Activist Raises Alarm

Ludhiana: As the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to grow worldwide, many individuals are increasingly relying on AI tools to search religious texts, including the sacred Gurbani enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. However, a recent incident has raised serious concerns within the Sikh community regarding the reliability of these technologies.

Sukhdeep Singh Barnala, a Sikh activist based in Calgary, Canada, has sounded the alarm after discovering that Google’s Gemini AI is quoting fabricated verses as “Gurbani.” In a video released on YouTube, Barnala explained that he queried the verse “Sagli Dharti Sadh Ki” on three AI platforms — ChatGPT, Grok, and Gemini — to verify whether it appears in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

According to Sukhdeep Singh Barnala, ChatGPT correctly responded that the verse is not from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. However, both Grok and Gemini incorrectly claimed that it was, even citing imaginary Ang (page) numbers and Raags. When he provided corrective feedback to Grok, the platform acknowledged the error and updated its response. In contrast, Gemini continued to insist that the verse was indeed present in the Sikh scripture.

Sukhdeep Singh Barnala questioned whether Gemini might be sourcing information from altered or unreliable versions of Gurbani. He has appealed to Sikh institutions and scholars to take serious note of the issue and intervene to ensure the integrity of Gurbani is not compromised by AI platforms.

In response to a query from Sikh Siyasat News regarding the controversy, some Sikh intellectuals emphasized that Sikhs and researchers should rely on traditional methods when reading and researching Gurbani. “Use of these tools is neither reliable nor advisable,” said a representative of Sikh Jatha Malwa, stressing the importance of preserving the authenticity and sanctity of Gurbani through conventional scholarly approaches.

The incident underscores the need for careful oversight and critical awareness as AI tools become more integrated into religious and spiritual inquiry.
