Sikh Coalition Provides Updates on Hostile Trucking Policies Targeting Immigrant CDL Holders

WASHINGTON, D.C. : The Sikh Coalition issued a comprehensive update on May 6, 2026, regarding recent legal and legislative developments impacting immigrant commercial drivers across the United States. A copy of the written release is available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN). The organization highlighted a series of federal and state-level challenges aimed at legal immigrants who hold commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs), reaffirming its commitment to protecting the livelihoods of thousands of drivers within the community.

A major focus of the update was a recent decision by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Lujan v. FMCSA II. The court declined to issue an emergency stay on a “final rule” from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that threatens the employment of a vast number of drivers. The Sikh Coalition noted that the lawsuit challenges the federal government’s attempt to push “roughly 200,000 immigrants who are lawfully present in the United States and authorized to drive trucks and other commercial vehicles out of the workforce by prohibiting them from maintaining their CDLs.” While the stay was denied, full arguments are scheduled for September.

Regarding state-level developments, the statement addressed the ongoing situation in California. Following pressure from the federal government, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (CA-DMV) previously moved to cancel approximately 20,000 licenses. However, following a class action lawsuit led by the Sikh Coalition and its partners, a judge ordered a renewal process for affected drivers. The organization revealed that “some 7,000 cancellations have since been found by the CA-DMV to have been issued in error,” providing a significant reprieve for those drivers wrongly targeted.

The Sikh Coalition also raised the alarm regarding proposed federal legislation known as “Dalilah’s Law” (H.R. 5688). While proponents claim the bill targets undocumented individuals, the organization argues it is designed to implement a ban on legal immigrants holding CDLs. In its statement, the Coalition criticized the current political climate, stating, “Feder al and state trucking policy across the nation continues to be increasingly hostile towards immigrant drivers.” They further denounced efforts to “smear all immigrant drivers as dangerous,” vowing to hold policymakers accountable regardless of political affiliation.
