United Sikhs’ ‘Good Will Walk’ ends in Malacca

Malacca: After walking through a gruelling 750km for 34 days, United Sikhs’ “Good Will Walk” ended at the Gurdwara Sahib Malacca this evening.
Welcomed by the applause of pilgrims thronging the Sikh temple for its annual prayers here, the team which helped raise RM100,000 for several noble causes was led by a bag pipe procession.
A visibly tired but satisfied looking United Sikhs humanitarian aid coordinator and food bank organisation director Rishiwant Singh Randhawa said the experience was well worth the blisters on his feet.
“We discovered so many scenic locations in Malaysia, especially up north in Perlis, Perak, and Negeri Sembilan.

“But what was most memorable was the beautiful people we met along the way from rural folk to well known personalities. Everyone was beautiful,” Rishiwant told The Rakyat Post.
The walk which began at Kampung Wang Kerian, Perlis, on April 19, will see its proceeds channelled to the Kelantan flood victims, Nepal earthquake disaster fund and the poor in Malaysia.
When asked on what inspired the walk and why it ended at a Sikh Gurdwara, Rishiwant said the walk was meant to unite people of all religions, races and creeds.
“We took inspiration from the late Sikh saint, Sant Baba Sohan Singh who himself used to walk from his house to the Gurdwara here.
“That is why we chose this location and this timing,”
The annual Malaysian Sikh festival is held in honour of the saint who passed away in Ipoh, Perak on May 24, 1972.
Preparing for the walk was not an easy task as the team took just two months to get its plans going.
“We had to postpone our volunteer services in Kelantan for this.
“Many said we need at least six months but I am glad we did it within such a short span of time.”
The walk inspired many renowned local personalities to join in.
Datuk Sheila Majid and Sazzy Falak, and activist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir were among those who walked together with the team members who walked an average of 25km each day.
Rishiwant said members of the public were always welcome to donate despite the walk having ended by purchasing the “Good Will Walk” t-shirts and logging on to www.unitedsikhs.org.
