Historical Context of Saka Nakodar
The seminar marks the tragic events of February 4, 1986, when Punjab Police opened fire on a peaceful procession of Sikhs in Nakodar, resulting in the martyrdom of four Sikh youths.
The peaceful convoy had gathered to respectfully transport the holy saroops (scriptures) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to Goindwal Sahib. Two days prior, on February 2, 1986, the holy scriptures had tragically caught fire and were desecrated at Gurdwara Guru Arjan Dev Ji in Nakodar.
According to historical accounts, the police actively chased down the unarmed Sikh youths before fatally shooting them. The four youths who attained martyrdom were:
-
Bhai Ravinder Singh Littran
-
Bhai Baldhir Singh Ramgarh
-
Bhai Jhilman Singh Gorsian
-
Bhai Harminder Singh Chalupur
Adding to the gravity of the human rights violations, the police refused to hand over the mortal remains of the martyred youths to their families. Instead, the authorities unlawfully cremated the bodies themselves, reportedly using kerosene and denying the families the right to perform the last rites according to proper Sikh maryada (religious code of conduct).
