Advo. Harpal Singh Cheema resigns as Chairman of Sikhs for Human Rights (SFHR)

Fatehgarh Sahib: Sikh activist Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema has stepped down from the chairmanship of Sikhs for Human Rights (SFHR).

In a written statement issued today, Bhai Harpal Singh Cheema said that he has authorized senior Adv. Amar Singh Chahal and Adv Jaspal Singh Manjhpur to resurrect the rights body by taking all other senior functionaries into confidence.

SFHR shot into limelight when it constituted a one-member People’s Commission led by Justice (retd) M Katju to probe the Bebhal Kalan police firing in which two Sikh protesters were gunned down. The commission has submitted its report indicting the police officials led by then SSP Moga for opening unprovoked firing on unarmed demonstrators protesting the incidents of sacrilege.

It is learnt that Advo. Harpal Singh Cheema has taken this step in view of Dal Khalsa and Akali Dal Panch Pardani merging into single entity on May 20 at a function in Chandigarh. It is likely that Cheema would get senior post in the new set-up.

The statement notes that Advocate Cheema and Kanwar Pal Singh of Dal Khalsa that has played the pivotal role in bringing both the Khalistani groups closer.
