”Civilians Killed Were Wearing Pathan Suit” Says India’s Military Tribunal While Justifying Bail Out Of Convicted Soldiers

New Delhi:  In a reasoning given by India’s military tribunal while justifying the release of the five soldiers convicted for murdering unarmed civilians and dubbing them as militants, it has said that the soldiers had reason to believe that the dead civilians were terrorist all beacuse they were wearing ‘Pathan Suit’.

Such a reasoning given out by the military tribunal  may compel any sane minded individual to think that what kind of incoherent people  are there at the helms of the affair giving out such festering justification to innocent civilian killing ?Following such justification it may become dangerous for an average Kashmiri to wear a Pathan suit so much so that he may be taken as a potential terrorist and gunned down by the Indian security forces.

The Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) in its bail order reportedly said that “The fact that the accused persons were terrorists… cannot be ruled out because they were wearing Pathan suits which are worn by terrorists.” It is notable that Pathan Suits are traditionally worn by the males in Kashmir valley and it is their common outfit.

The extra-judicial shooting came to be known as the Machil fake encounter in which three civilians were killed in cold blood by soldiers looking to collect a bounty on militants. Subsequently, an army court sentenced six soldiers, including a colonel, to life in jail but five of them went into appeal before the AFT in New Delhi, notes Hindustan Times (HT).

Furthermore, the AFT is of the firm believe that  the three men killed were not civilians because they had ventured too close to the de facto border between India and Pakistan, which is often used by militants to travel between the two countries. “There was absolutely no justification for a civilian to be present at such a forward formation near LoC, that too during the night when infiltration from across the border was high,” reads the quote from the statement given by AFT published in an English tabloid.
