According to recent reports, Muzaffarnagar, the troubled western Uttar Pradesh district, is again on the boil as the death anniversary of last year’s Muzaffarnagar violence approaches, in which two cousins were lynched by a mob in Kawal village on August 28 when they were allegedly trying to escape after killing a man who had harassed their sister. The cousins were belonging to Hindu community while the alleged harasser was from Muslim community.

The killing of three persons last year had led to a series of panchayats and rallies in the district, barely 125 km northeast of Delhi.

Clashes erupted on September 7 when people returning from a panchayat of Nangla Mandaud village were ambushed and attacked at different locations.

The clashes between the Hindu and Muslim communities in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, India in August – September 2013, resulted in at least 62 deaths including 42 Muslims and 20 Hindus and injured 93 and left more than 50,000 displaced.

Indian media reports suggest that there are apprehension of clashes in Muzaffarnagar on the anniversary of last year’s violence.
