Chandigarh/ Punjab (April 17, 2014): It is learnt that the Gurmat Sidhant Parcharak Sant Samaj and Mehta faction of Damdami Taksal have extended their support to Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) in Lok Sabha Elections.

The Sant Samaj, led by Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma – head of Damdami Taksal (Mehta), has been supporting Badal Dal since 2009.

As per media reports while declaring their support to Badal Dal candidates Baba Harnam Singh Dhumma, said, “Keeping in view the of interests of Panth and Punjab, Sant Samaj has decided to back SAD (B) in Lok Sabha elections. It will play an important role for the victory of SAD (B) candidates as in the last Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections of 2011, state assembly elections of 2012 and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections of 2013.”

Baba Harnam Singh further said that Sant Samaj would appeal to Sikh voters to vote for SAD candidates in Sri Anandpur Sahib, Sri Fatehgarh Sahib, Khadur Sahib, Ferozpur, Faridkot, Bathinda, Patiala, Sangrur, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana constituencies.

When he was asked about support to remaining three constituencies, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur, he said the position for these seats is not yet decided. It is notable that these three seats are being contested by candidates of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), political ally of Badal Dal. BJP is known for it’s pro-hindutva and anti-minority agendas. Moreover, BJP leadership had been opposing the martyrs memorial for the Shaheeds of June 1984 built by Damdami Taksal with permission from SGPC in Darbar Sahib complex.
